Community Benefit Philosophy and Principles
Thank you for your interest in EMHS Community Benefit, our commitment to our charitable mission and community support. Our goal is to serve documented needs and deliver measurable results that will help improve and strengthen our community and the health of residents who live, work and play in northern, eastern and central Maine.
EMHS strives to live up to its non-profit mission every day by caring for community members who otherwise would have limited access to quality healthcare. Besides providing charity care and financial assistance, we also believe we can affect the health and wellness of the communities we serve beyond care inside our hospitals and other health provider organizations. We agree with the World Health Organization which states, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Our vision of corporate citizenship is to impact our community’s overall well-being through commitments to:
Improving the quality of care.
improving access to primary care, especially for the medically underserved/needy.
supporting, providing and advocating for health education and promotion, and disease prevention – especially for chronic conditions that EMHS has identified as priorities (diabetes, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder); obesity, and malnutrition.
collaborating with and supporting other organizations that share a mission parallel to ours and are pursuing quality of life efforts, such as healthy community initiatives, community-building, economic, educational, civic, and cultural.
The EMHS Community Benefit program was developed to:
serve documented community needs and deliver measurable results that will improve health and wellness;
demonstrate our commitment to charitable endeavors and community support through responsible stewardship of healthcare resources;
provide a systematic approach to philanthropy and community health improvement; to link our charitable giving and partnerships with community needs and our mission of service;
document our benefit to the community and to be accountable to the public we serve.
We consider charitable request applications that meet established eligibility criteria and align with our Community Benefit philosophy and principles.
